Well, in my experience, everyone falls into one of two categories:
a. Those who organise what they'll most likely need and bring a little extra cash in case, and
b. Those who bring a little bit of everything and see what happens.

Now obviously we can't tell you exactly what you need to bring, as everyone has different needs and holiday destinations, so we will pick a common scenario:
'You're going on a 3 day long weekend trip, hotel not far from the beach, sunny skies are expected but a possible shower and a chilly night or two.'
1.
Clothes.
Pick
out the clothes you want to wear each day you are gone. I'll be honest,
in the past I have been guilty of thinking "I'll pack a few of this and
that, and see what I feel like
wearing on the day"...half the stuff never gets used! Work out roughly
what combos you'll
wear and this cuts down on unnecessary bulk. Example:
Choose lightweight comfortable fabrics that won't wrinkle when they are packed. Fold the clothes as flat as possible and set them aside to add later.
Pack socks, underwear and pajamas at the bottom of your suitcase, fitting whatever you can into your shoes to make for more packing room. Instead of bringing a massive beach towel, try purchasing a gym towel..most are quick drying and easy to pack.
2. Shoes.
At
the
bottom of your bag or suitcase, pack the shoes you will need for your
long
weekend. Bring two pairs of shoes: one you can use for active stuff
(sightseeing, walking, biking) and a pair of classy flats or small heels
to wear for a dinner on the town.
4. Accessories.
Put any accessories into your bag that you might need for your trip (in this case: sun hat, favourite necklace, sunglasses).
5. Toiletries.
Take only the essentials and one 'must-have' product from your bathroom. I recommend a Ladies Be Prepared Overnight Essentials kit with sample sizes of all the toiletries you will need (click on the link to find out more). Don't forget sunscreen and headache tablets!6. Make-up and hair products.
It's a holiday so try to give your skin a rest. Bring a tinted moisturiser, waterproof mascara and some tinted lip balm (that can also be used for a light blush) and you're set. As for your hair, let the sunny weather do the drying and bring a good comb to keep knots at bay. Mini sizes of dry shampoo (like the Batiste range) and a leave in conditioner for beach-goers are handy too, but remember its sometimes fun roughing it for a couple of days.
7. Entertainment.
Include a
book, ipod and anything else (like a deck of cards) you'll need to keep you occupied
during downtime. 8. Finish it off.
Add your clothes to the top of the bag or suitcase, throw in a couple of plastic shopping bags (for wet/dirty clothes later) and zip it up. Now, you're ready to go.Tip: When doing the final packing check, a good friend of mine likes to start from the top of her head and work her way down..do I have shampoo/conditioner? Face wash? Bra and T-shirt?
Do you have any good tips that you find handy when you're packing for a holiday? Things that you pack but hardly ever use? We would love to hear from you.

Choose a comfortable pair of jeans for each day along with a nice blouse
or t-shirt. Choose items that can be changed into quickly and won't
wrinkle.
